Ian Wright and Roy Keane have argued that Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka is the signing of the season following his influential debut campaign on Wearside.
The Swiss midfielder has garnered all kinds of plaudits since joining the newly promoted Black Cats from Bayer Leverkusen last summer, and has played a pivotal role in ensuring that Regis Le Bris’ men have comfortably avoided a relegation battle this term.
At the time of writing, Xhaka has five Premier League assists and a goal to his name in red and white, and has been lauded by many for his leadership skills, as well as the grit and guile he has injected into Sunderland’s engine room.
To that end, during a discussion on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, the likes of Wright, Keane, and fellow pundit Paul Scholes have all touted Xhaka as a contender for “signing of the season”, alongside Manchester City star Antoine Semenyo and Liverpool forward Hugo Ekitike.

Scholes then interjected: “Granit Xhaka?”, to which Wright replied: “Granit Xhaka has been brilliant for Sunderland. I’d say for me, and for Sunderland, and for how important it was for Sunderland to stay up, I’m going with Granit. He’s been magnificent for them.”
Ex-Sunderland boss Keane then concluded: “He’s been brilliant, yeah. He’s excellent. His experience and decision-making...”
