Joe Gomez ruled out vs. Everton with another new injury

Joe Gomez will not be available when Liverpool head to the Hill Dickinson Stadium for the first time to face Everton, having picked up another new injury.

Gomez replaced Jeremie Frimpong at half-time in Tuesday’s 2-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain only to be substituted himself 22 minutes later.

That came due to concerns he would sustain an injury – and speaking in his pre-Everton press conference on Friday, Arne Slot confirmed that was ultimately the case.

The 28-year-old is ruled out of the Merseyside derby with an unspecified issue, with it possible that it is related to his recent hamstring problems.

Speaking after the defeat to PSG, Slot said: “I wanted to make a different substitution and then he said to me: ‘I’m not convinced if I can keep sprinting, I feel a little bit, so I think it’s better to go off not to take the risk’.

“I think that was my fourth substitution, so to keep someone on who might get injured afterwards is never a smart thing.”

It continues an alarming rate of injury for Gomez, who enters the final year of his contract this summer.

The versatile defender was set for a £13 million move to AC Milan at the end of the transfer window last summer but the breakdown of Liverpool’s deal to sign Marc Guehi blocked his exit.

Brighton and Crystal Palace also registered their interest at the time, while Newcastle were close to landing a £45 million deal in 2024.

Liverpool are likely to consider offers for Gomez at the end of the season with no indication at this stage that they are planning to open talks over an extended contract.

Despite his decade of service it would be no surprise if the Englishman’s injury issues prompt a sale, with it difficult to rely upon a player who so often drops out of contention.

There has been no further update on Gomez’s latest setback but he is aided by a return to a game-a-week schedule after Liverpool’s Champions League exit.

After the Merseyside derby the Reds have five clear days before the visit of Crystal Palace, with another seven days off between that game and their trip to Man United on May 3.

With Gomez out against Everton it is likely that Slot hands Frimpong another start, though Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones remain options if required.
