Liverpool"could make a move"for£95m-rated ace who's scored vs Reds 3 times in the past

Liverpool “could make a move” for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon in the summer, according to former scout Mick Brown.

The £95m-rated former Everton man grew up as a Reds supporter and has been linked with a switch to Anfield in recent years, only for it not to materialise.

The rumours continue to swirl, however, and talking to Football Insider, Brown talked up the idea of Liverpool making a move for Gordon at the end of the season:

“Talk about Anthony Gordon’s future isn’t going away. He’s a player with a lot of talent and quality, but he’s had spells this season where he’s gone 15 games without a goal, then he comes back and has a good run, then he fades again.

“For a club like Newcastle, you’re relying on your best players to be fit and firing week in, week out, and if they’re not then you end up in the situation they are in. On that basis, if clubs come in with a big offer for him, I expect they’re ready to let him go.

“It doesn’t surprise me to hear there is interest in him from clubs like Bayern Munich and Liverpool as well, because he’s got the quality to be a top player. Liverpool are losing Mohamed Salah and they’ve always had an interest in Gordon, so they could make a move for him if he’s going to be available.

“Then, you have to question what he’s thinking, because it has always been hinted that he would like to move to Liverpool, so he could be keen to move on too. It might be time for a parting of the ways for both him and Newcastle if these big offers are going to come in, because it’s been a frustrating season for them.”

Is Anthony Gordon good enough to take Liverpool up a level?

Gordon is clearly a good player, becoming an established figure for both Newcastle and England, and potentially even starting on the left wing for the Three Lions at this summer’s World Cup.

The 25-year-old has broken Liverpool hearts three times in the past by scoring that number of times against them, and his pace and directness would be an asset.

But given the huge amount that the Reds would likely have to spend on Gordon, other non-English players may ultimately prove to be better value for money.

A tally of 39 goals and 28 assists in 152 appearances for Newcastle is a respectable return – he has scored 10 times in the Champions League this season – but does he have a world-class ceiling?

That’s what Liverpool have to weigh up, as they look to sign at least one elite winger before next season starts, replacing Mohamed Salah and upgrading on Cody Gakpo.
