“Obviously, he is amazing at what he does, but to play in front of him can be tough,” he said.
“I have gotten a lot better with it as I have gotten older, but when I first joined, as you know, he goes mad. He makes the most simple save and he is coming out [shouting at] someone.”
“I have gotten to the point now where I just completely ignore him. He will be shouting all sorts at me.”
Pickford’s vocal style backed by performances
Pickford’s behaviour is not unique to Keane’s experience, with the goalkeeper consistently describing himself as a vocal leader who must stay connected with his defence.
In previous interviews, he has explained that his communication is designed to guide teammates and maintain concentration throughout matches, rather than criticise.
That approach has been reinforced by his performances this season, with Pickford among the Premier League’s top goalkeepers and leading the division in goals prevented, according to season data.
Gary Neville has admitted he was so wrong to doubt Pickford and has been completely convinced by the Everton goalkeeper over recent years.
Keane acknowledged that balance, making clear that the challenges of playing alongside Pickford come with significant benefits.
“Things like that are just what he is like, but he is incredible. I think this season he has probably gone to another level with some of the saves,” he added.
