Opinion: Everton handed European boost before kicking a ball after Premier League development

Everton have been handed an early boost in the Premier League’s European race, after Brentford were held to a 0-0 draw by Fulham.

David Moyes will have been delighted to see Everton’s European rivals both drop points before the Blues had even kicked a ball.

With the run-in tightening and margins shrinking, Brentford’s failure to win opens a clear path for Everton to climb into the European places before they even take to the pitch this weekend.

What would you say to the lads before they head out for kick-off on Sunday? 🤔

Sixth place could even turn into a Champions League spot, with Everton now knowing three points in the Merseyside Derby would see them leapfrog the Bees into seventh.

Everton’s position stronger than the table suggests

Jordan Pickford knows Everton have a big shot at European qualification, with three points on the line against Liverpool on Sunday.

Everton have played one game fewer than Brentford and now sit within a single result of seventh place.

What is your prediction for this weekend’s Merseyside Derby? 🫣

More importantly, sixth place remains within reach, with Chelsea also on 48 points. The gap is minimal, and the uncertainty of this season’s European qualification only increases the stakes.

Moyes has targeted European qualification from all the way back in the summer.

That reality transforms Everton’s position. They are not chasing from distance, they are now right in the fight.

A defining stretch now awaits

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall wants Everton to make a statement when they face Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Everton have six matches remaining, including key games against Liverpool and Manchester City, while Brentford have only five games left.

The Toffees have gained momentum without playing, with Everton coming out the winners from the game at the Gtech Community Stadium.

It is now very simple for Everton, the power is in their hands. The Blues will be playing one of the European competitions next season if they win all of their upcoming games.
