'I've seen it': Jeremie Frimpong insists Florian Wirtz has a quality that Liverpool fans are sadly yet to see

Jeremie Frimpong was part of a £450m spending spree at Liverpool during the 2025 summer transfer window.

Despite the mammoth window, Arne Slot’s men have fallen off in the current campaign.

But Frimpong has been upbeat about the future of the club in an interview with the Telegraph, in which he always had high praise for Florian Wirtz and his ability to produce in tough moments.

How do you feel about Alexander Isak starting against Everton?

And with Hugo Ekitike out, who should be Liverpool's front three at the Hill Dickinson?

Florian Wirtz’s ability to step up in big moments praised

Wirtz was criticised when he first joined Liverpool in a £116m move from Bayer Leverkusen.

He took a few months to score or assist in the Premier League before finally starting to reach his previous level towards the back end of 2025.

Still, fans are probably yet to truly see the player who helped carry Bayer Leverkusen to the Bundesliga title in 2024.

Now, Frimpong has praised Wirtz’s ability to make something happen and step up in big moments when the duo were at Leverkusen together.

He said: “It’s not often two team-mates move to another team. Of course we had spoken about it. We knew each other, we know how each other likes to get the ball.

“I know where he can get space, I know when he wants it and how to get him to score. I can only say this, if it wasn’t for Flo we wouldn’t have won the Bundesliga [undefeated] or the Cup [in 2024]. I know what he can do. He knows what he can do. It’s just for you guys to wait and see.

“Look, he’s just so good on the ball, so comfortable. He hasn’t got my speed but he is fast because of how his mind works.

“I’ve seen it. I know it’s there and I’ve seen him do it at the highest level. What makes him different? At Leverkusen, it was like this: when we needed a goal, he was there. When we need something to happen, when we needed to win, he was there. He makes it happen.”

Wirtz has six goals and 10 assists in 44 matches this term, but he’s hardly performed when Liverpool as a squad have been struggling.

This may be down to a change in leagues, with the Premier League being a lot more physical than the Bundesliga.

It could also be because Slot has often played the 22-year-old out wide this term, whereas he played 157 of his 197 Leverkusen games as a central attacking midfielder.
