Rio Ngumoha has offered hope for the future during a difficult season for Liverpool. The teenage winger has already set several records with the Reds as he strives for a regular spot in Arne Slot’s side.
The youngster grabbed headlines by scoring a last-gasp winner against Newcastle United in August, just days before his 17th birthday. By finding the net at St James’ Park, Ngumoha became the youngest goalscorer in the club’s history.
The Liverpool starlet was initially used sparingly by the manager as he eased the winger into his first team squad. However, Ngumoha has gradually seen his role grow and was handed his second league start of the season against Fulham last weekend.
Handed a rare chance to impress from the first whistle, Ngumoha seized his opportunity. The forward received the ball on the left flank and stood up to full-back Timothy Castagne near the corner of the penalty box before finding the space to curl his shot into the far corner.

Ngumoha was involved in the build-up as Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead before half-time and ensured victory for the Reds. The two wingers getting on the scoresheet marked the crossing of two different eras, with the youngster beginning to make his way at Anfield while Salah’s time is coming to an end.
In March, Salah announced he would be leaving Liverpool in the summer. While the Egyptian icon will be irreplaceable, his departure will allow the Reds to hand Ngumoha his ideal shirt number.
Speaking to Sky Sports about his dream number, Ngumoha said: “Seventy-three holds a special place in my heart, obviously the first number I received.
“It was just random. But my dream number would be 11. Watching Neymar play for Barcelona and Mo obviously has broken all the records with No.11.”
The teenager has proven himself to be a special talent, having made his first team bow at the start of last year. Despite his young age, Ngumoha has had the opportunity to learn from more experienced players in the squad, including Salah.

“One time after training [Salah] told me the top, top players, along with your ability, they also get goals and assists,” he recalled. “Obviously he has broken many records, so him saying that to me and saying he knows I’m a good player but to get to the next level just add the goals and assists.”
On the experience of training alongside the Liverpool hero, Ngumoha added: “Seeing Mo, he has achieved basically everything in football. He’s very friendly as well. Sometimes people forget that they’re just people as well. Obviously, they have all the fame but they are just nice people and you learn a lot from them.”
Should the teenage sensation inherit Salah’s shirt number next season, he is unlikely to be affected by pressure. He may still be seeking a regular spot in Slot’s team but Ngumoha refuses to put a limit on the heights he could reach throughout his career.
When asked about his ambitions, the Reds star said: “I’m very confident in myself. Hopefully a Ballon d’Or! I’d also like many club trophies with Liverpool – many Premier Leagues, Champions Leagues. Obviously everyone wants to win that. But just being regarded as one of the best players that’s ever played football.”
