Giorgi Mamardashvili taken to hospital: Arne Slot says “let’s see” on knee injury

Giorgi Mamardashvili was the latest Liverpool player stretchered off due to an injury, with Arne Slot revealing the goalkeeper was sent to hospital.

In the continued absence of Alisson, Mamardashvili was named for his sixth successive start in the first Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

In the act of Everton scoring the equaliser, the Georgian took the force of Beto’s outstretched boot directly on his knee, and club doctors quickly called for the stretcher.

It was the second time in a week that the Reds had watched one of their players taken off in such a manner, and Slot offered an update after the match, revealing he had been taken to hospital.

Speaking to reporters, he said: “Giorgi had to go to hospital, a big wound, so let’s see how he will be.”

With Freddie Woodman called on from the bench, Slot credited the 29-year-old for staying calm after his introduction as he turned to humour to address his side’s injury situation.

“Is there anything that surprises you when it comes to injuries with us this season?” Slot retorted.

“Maybe I already envisaged it, because I had two goalkeepers on the bench today, which I normally don’t have. But, of course, has everything to do with the availability of all the other positions.

“Freddie did a great job. He deserves a lot of credit because you have to come in just after conceding 1-1 and the fans were ready for it, but he did his job really well.

“Kept calm in a difficult moment and kept his nerve, worked so hard to have this moment.

“Usually third goalkeepers don’t play a lot, but in a season like ours, I think if you are playing in the [academy] at Liverpool you should be ready to make your debut because it’s unbelievable what’s happening to us.”

When is Alisson expected back from injury for Liverpool?

Alisson revealed he is expecting a return later this month, with his latest hamstring issue having kept him sidelined since the trip to Brighton before the March international break.

It remains to be seen if the Brazilian is fit to return next weekend, when Liverpool host Crystal Palace, but there is a realistic chance Freddie Woodman, who replaced Mamardashvili, will start.

The 29-year-old joined the club in the summer after his contract at Preston North End expired, acting as the third senior ‘keeper behind Alisson and Mamardashvili.

His substitute appearance at the Hill Dickinson marked his first Premier League outing since September 2021 for Newcastle, and his second match for Liverpool after a start in the Carabao Cup.

Armin Pecsi, who also signed in the summer, would be the next in line if neither Alisson nor Mamardashvili are fit to return to the squad.

Following the visit of Palace in the Premier League, Arne Slot‘s men make the trip to Old Trafford on May 3, and it is anyone’s guess which goalkeeper will start in a fortnight.
