Despite Liverpool having to rely on Freddie Woodman in goal for almost an entire 45 minutes, Everton were unable to take advantage in the Merseyside derby.
It looked like David Moyes would have to settle for a point as the seconds ticked away and the scoreline read 1-1. However, a header from Virgil van Dijk in the 110th minute inflicted agony on the Toffees.
Jamie Carragher – who used to support Everton – was delighted to see Liverpool win the first Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but conceded that his side were fortunate.
What could Moyes have done differently to avoid that late goal? 🫣

Jamie Carragher admits 1-1 would have been a fair result in the Merseyside derby
The man born in Bootle held his hands up after the final whistle and admitted 1-1 would have been a fair result between Everton and Liverpool.
Carragher – who also praised Beto – told Sky Sports: “The result is absolutely huge for Liverpool when you consider the Chelsea result yesterday. When that board went up for 11 minutes, I’d have shook (hands) with anyone and taken a point from a Liverpool point of view.
“With the situation with the goalkeeper, Everton were a little bit more threatening. Liverpool were a small team towards the end of that game and I was fearful of set-pieces.”
The UEFA Champions League is probably out of sight for Everton – who have lost Jarrad Branthwaite to injury – now, with Liverpool eight points clear in fifth place, although the UEFA Europa League remains a realistic target for the Toffees.

After Chelsea lost 1-0 to Manchester United on Saturday, there is just a point between Everton and sixth place with five games remaining.
Having said that, Brentford and Bournemouth are level with Chelsea on 48 points, while Brighton are also on 47 points along with Everton, so there is plenty of competition for sixth place – to say the least.

It was undoubtedly a disappointing result in the Merseyside derby, but Everton showed they have enough in the tank to compete for – at the very least – a spot in the UEFA Conference League.
