Jamie Carragher has suggested that Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk could leave the club next summer. Just moments after his last-minute header won the Merseyside Derby, Carragher made quite the claim when speaking about Liverpool's 2-1 win with the goals coming from Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

He said on Sky Sports: "The result is absolutely huge for Liverpool when you consider the Chelsea result yesterday. When that board went up for 11 minutes, I'd have shook with anyone and taken a point from a Liverpool point of view.

"With the situation with the goalkeeper, Everton were a little bit more threatening. Liverpool were a small team towards the end of that game and I was fearful of set-pieces.

"When you think of how Liverpool have won this game - two of the absolute legends of the club have done it. They won't be here much longer. Salah and probably Van Dijk in 12 months' time.

"Two of the absolute greats. Salah has done it again against Liverpool's biggest rivals, as he always does. Against Everton or Man Utd, you can always rely upon him."

Van Dijk has struggled at points this season but has now scored big goals against Sunderland and Everton. He signed a new two-year contract at Anfield last summer which makes it very possible he does depart in 2027.

Andy Robertson, meanwhile, is a Liverpool player who sees his current deal end at the end of the season and that is when he will departing.

The Scotland international put in a tremendous shift at left-back with Ibrahima Konate among those urging him to celebrate in front of the away supporters.

Third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was another pushed in that direction after he came on for Giorgi Mamardashvili, who picked up an injury during Beto's equalising goal.

That seems to be another concern for Slot, but only in the short-term as he confirmed after the game. The same cannot be said for Hugo Ekitike, though.

He suffered a serious Achilles injury as Liverpool were knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain earlier this week.

The focus for Slot and his players is firmly on being back in that competition next season with their win and defeat Chelsea meaning just nine points from their final 15 will be enough.

Wins for Aston Villa and Manchester United, who beat the Blues, also moved them closer to sealing a top-five finish while Liverpool dashed Everton's European hopes with their victory.
