Giorgi Mamardashvili faces three weeks out – Freddie Woodman next in line

Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to be sidelined for three weeks after his collision against Everton led to a nasty gash on his left leg.

The goalkeeper was sent to hospital after being stretchered off the pitch due to a deep wound below his left knee inflicted while blocking Beto’s shot.

Mamardashvili’s personal update the morning after was that he was “fine” and will “be back soon,” but Geo Team, who have a close connection with the goalkeeper, expect a three-week return timeline.

They report the Georgian “had an open wound stitched” and the recovery will “determine the mobility of his knee,” leading to a likely three-week absence before he can return to training.

Mamardashvili will, therefore, have to wait for the stitches to heal his wound, then be removed and without pain before marking his return, a process that will require patience on his part.

It is a reliable source for the goalkeeper’s injury situation and one that will put Alisson‘s fitness ahead of Crystal Palace‘s visit firmly in the spotlight.

The Brazilian had not returned to training ahead of PSG’s visit last week, but he was targeting a late-April return after his latest hamstring issue.

He has missed the last six matches in all competitions and if he is not ready to mark his return on Saturday, third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman will be needed to step in again.

The 29-year-old made his second appearance of the season off the bench against Everton, but has not started a Premier League fixture since playing for Newcastle against Man United in 2021.

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford in the first weekend of May, and Arne Slot will be hopeful Alisson is back fit with Mamardashvili now unlikely to return before the final fortnight of 2025/26.

Slot, however, was full of praise for Woodman after his cameo against Everton, saying: “Freddie did a great job.

“He deserves a lot of credit because you have to come in just after conceding 1-1 and the fans were ready for it, but he did his job really well.

“He kept calm in a difficult moment and kept his nerve, worked so hard to have this moment.”
