'So helpful': Jagielka has a theory why Thomas Tuchel will take Everton's James Garner to the…

The World Cup is now just a couple of months away – and James Garner has given himself a great chance of being on the plane.

The midfielder is having the season of his life, and has often been the main man this term for the Toffees in their unexpected push for European football.

He has been practically ever-present for Everton.

Is James Garner actually better as a full-back or in midfield? 🤔

He's been exceptional just about all season for the Blues!

James Garner has just got better and better as the games have gone by, and appears to be relishing being the man who makes Everton tick.

His game has come on leaps and bounds, and he now has the kind of complete game that makes a midfielder so invaluable.

Ahead of the Merseyside Derby, Garner was the subject of some analysis on Sky Sports – and Phil Jagielka explained why he’s likely to go to the World Cup with England.

Phil Jagielka says James Garner will be picked by England for his versatility

Garner was a focus for Sky pundits Phil Jagielka and Jamie Carragher yesterday, and both were in agreement that he will make England’s final World Cup squad.

Of course, he is new on the scene having made his debut during the March international break.

Thomas Tuchel started him against Uruguay and then gave him more minutes off the bench against Japan.

Some have wondered if his lack of experience at international level will count against him.

But Jagielka has theorised that Tuchel will take him for his versatility.

He said: “It’s been so useful (his versatility). Both teams have struggled at right-back at certain times. But that might be the reason he gets on the plane.

“Thomas Tuchel might want that versatility. Obviously someone he can rely on, not only to play the games, but the training sessions when you’re in camp for so long.”

Garner needs five more decent Everton performances

There is no overstating how good a season this has been so far from Garner, who has played a massive part in Everton’s unlikely push for European football.

For him to miss out would be extremely disappointing. But there’s a chance it could yet happen, which is why it’s so important for him to finish the season well.

Appearances – 36

Minutes played – 3264

Pass accuracy – 88%

Goals – 3

Assists – 6

Just five games remain for Everton now.

And while Garner will have full focus on helping his side secure European football, he’ll also be keen to ensure he shines with Tuchel no doubt keeping a close eye on him.

Just a few more decent showings from him will surely give him a very good chance. As Jagielka suggests, Tuchel would benefit immensely from taking a player like him to the tournament.
