No real progression in £300k/week contract re-negotiation talks

Dominik Szoboszlai has sparked fresh concern over his contract discussions with Liverpool owners FSG.

The Hungarian is under contract with Liverpool until 30 June 2028, meaning just two transfer windows remain before his deal expires.

Liverpool will need to capitalise on the remaining years with a sale if they cannot extend his terms if they want to avoid a repeat of the Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ibrahima Konate contract sagas. The jury is still out over whether Konate will extend his deal or not.

Recent reports suggest Liverpool were ready to meet Szoboszlai’s exorbitant £300,000 per week contract demands. However, that is now put into doubt amid fresh comments from the 25-year-old.

“I love being here,” Szoboszlai stated emphatically on 4 April*. “My family is happy, I love the club, I love the fans, I love to play for this club and that is it.”*

Comments this weekend, however, suggest the success of Szoboszlai’s contract talks is not the sure thing previously reported.

‘No real progression’ over new Liverpool contract, says Szoboszlai

Szoboszlai said: “There has been no real progression over new contract. My contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see.

“I love being here, as I’ve said many times. I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. Let’s see.”

The midfielder reiterated his desire to stay long-term, but he worryingly added that his contract extension is not up to him. This appears to suggest it’s not a certainty that his deal will be renewed.

He added: “Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands anymore. I love being here, as I said many times; I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy. I’m completely relaxed.”

Szoboszlai one of the few players shining under Arne Slot this season, but he’s still being limited

Szoboszlai is enjoying a high-productivity season for Liverpool, with 12 goals and 9 assists. This is actually the exact same as Mohamed Salah which is a bit odd in the penultimate month of the Premier League season.

Good reflection of Dom’s season and a sad reflection of Mo’s.

Szoboszlai is one of the few players in the squad who hasn’t suffered a total loss of form under Arne Slot this season. The likes of Salah, Mac Allister, Gravenberch and Konate have seen their form fall off a cliff in 2025 and 2026.

Szoboszlai, however, has not been himself for a few weeks, scoring his last goal for Liverpool on 18 March when scored in the 4-0 win over Galatasaray at Anfield.

Against Manchester City and PSG, however, the lack of tactical strength in Liverpool’s midfield, he was unable to be of much use to the Reds. They chased the ball for a total of 270 minutes in the 4-0 FA Cup quarterfinal defeat to City and the two-legged last eight losses to PSG in the Champions League.

The 2-1 win over Everton was a last-gasp blessing but it took Liverpool 102 minutes of play to secure the victory – hardly a sign of dominance.
