'Come on': Ruud Gullit says it's 'ridiculous' what he's now hearing about Arne Slot at Liverpool

Arne Slot’s future has been a constant source of debate going into the summer of 2026.

Fans are sick of Slot and have been calling for the Dutchman to be replaced in the dugout for a while now.

Liverpool will end the season without a trophy and are just about going to get into the Champions League because there are five places this season and teams below them are struggling, but Ruud Gullit still thinks the 47-year-old should be given another campaign at Anfield.

Is a fifth-place finish enough to warrant Arne Slot remaining Liverpool manager?

Liverpool told to give Arne Slot another season

The former Chelsea man, as quoted by the Daily Mail, thinks the fact Liverpool won the league last term is enough to warrant him being given another season to turn things around.

He stated: “Ridiculous! They (Liverpool) didn’t win (the league) for a long, long time. They win the championship and now all of a sudden, you want to kick him out?

“A lot of things happened here with Liverpool, a lot of things. Come on. People need more time to mourn (the death of Diogo Jota on the eve of the season). It has a huge effect on the team what happened with Liverpool.

“Therefore they need to give Slot another season in order to get it right. Come on.”

Slot has had a few mitigating factors that help explain why Liverpool didn’t really come close to challenging for the Premier League title in 2025/26.

But results haven’t necessarily been the main issue. Overall performances and a lack of any sort of clear style have been the standout problems.

The win over Everton should ease some pressure on Slot for now at least, but if Liverpool struggle in their remaining five matches and somehow don’t finish fifth despite a seven-point lead over their rivals, it is hard to see the manager sticking around.

Even if he does stay put, there is a risk we are in a similar situation to the end of Brendan Rodgers’ tenure, when he needed to be replaced in the first few months of a season anyway after he was backed over the summer.
