Fabrizio Romano has commented on a potential new contract after Dominik Szoboszlai spoke on talks after the Merseyside derby win.

Szoboszlai, who provided the corner from which Virgil van Dijk headed home a last-minute winner in the 100th minute to seal all three points, was asked about the state of negotiations for a new deal after the final whistle. His response was measured but telling.

“There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation,” he told reporters. “We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that. As you guys know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see.”

The 25-year-old, who was making his 100th Premier League appearance in that fixture, did not shy away from acknowledging the uncertainty either. “Of course I see myself here in the long term, but it is not really in my hands anymore,” he admitted. “I love being here. I love the fans. My family is happy. I’m completely relaxed”

The phrase “not really in my hands anymore” is the line that will concern Liverpool supporters most. It suggests that while Szoboszlai remains open to staying, the ball is firmly in the club’s court to produce an offer that reflects his standing within the squad. Having registered 12 goals and nine assists across all competitions this season, his value to Arne Slot’s side is beyond question.

Now Fabrizio Romano, taking to YouTube, has claimed that talks are positive and that he would not “spread negative messages” about the negotiations:

“Dominik Szoboszlai has also addressed his contract situation, but with a different tone.”

“My understanding is that negotiations between Szoboszlai and Liverpool are ongoing. They are not collapsed, nor are they at an advanced stage yet. There is still work needing to be done, but it’s not very far between the two parties.

“The discussions are positive, and there is no significant gap between the parties, but more work is required before reaching the final stages, as Liverpool have done with Konate.”

“I would not spread negative messages about the conversation between Szoboszlai and Liverpool.”

For now, Szoboszlai is focused on the pitch – and given what he produced at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday and this entire campaign, Liverpool will be desperate to ensure that remains the case for years to come.
