Branthwaite injury blow leaves Everton sweating on Europe

Late in the second-half against Liverpool, Jarrad Branthwaite suffered a hamstring injury and now looks set to miss the rest of the season for Everton.

The 23-year-old has been nursing a hamstring issue all season which has halted his campaign, as the defender has only featured ten times for David Moyes's men.

Since returning to the side Everton have been managing Branthwaite's minutes as he didn't start in the 2-1 victory over Fulham in February and was missing in the 2-0 defeat against Arsenal.

Everton have five games remaining of the Premier League and have a strong chance of achieving European football for the first time since finishing seventh in the 2016/17 season.

However, with the Blues being without the 23-year-old does that put Europe at risk for Everton?

What will Everton miss?

The England international has been vital when he's played for the Blues as they've won four times, drawing three and losing three.

Branthwaite's ability on the ball will be hugely missed as the defender brings a calmness to the Everton back-four.

In the Merseyside derby the defender showed his quality on the ball as his pass cut open Liverpool's right-hand side and released Beto through on goal.

His recovery pace also came into use as he managed to force Alexander Isak out wide and prevented a Liverpool breakaway.

In the defeat to their neighbours, the defender had an 89% pass accuracy and often Everton's build-up play goes through Branthwaite as he's comfortable on both feet.

Who replaces him?

Michael Keane has featured 30 times for the Blues this season and has been a key performer. The 33-year-old has scored three times this season and his average rating has been 7.08 according to FotMob.

Another potential option for Everton is to move Jake O'Brien from right-back to centre-half as the 24-year-old has only played in his natural position five times this season.

James Garner could be an option at right-back as the 24-year-old has played there on numerous occasions this season for the Blues. Nathan Patterson is another option but has found minutes hard to come by this season.
