Sunday’s Merseyside derby win over Everton looks set to secure Champions League qualification for Liverpool, a boost that could significantly shape their transfer plans heading into a crucial summer window.
Arne Slot is already facing a major challenge at Anfield after a mixed season, with the club struggling to build on last summer’s spending spree of over £400million. Expectations for another heavy outlay this year remain low.
However, with Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson both set to depart, and Hugo Ekitike facing a lengthy spell out injured, Liverpool are aware of key areas that need addressing.
There is also uncertainty over the futures of Rhys Williams and third-choice goalkeeper Freddie Woodman, who made his Premier League debut for the club as a substitute in the 2-1 win over Everton.
Both players are out of contract this summer, along with defender Ibrahima Konate. However, Konate has suggested he is “close to an agreement” with Liverpool over a new deal and says there is a “big chance” he will remain at Anfield next season.
Prior to Liverpool’s 2-1 victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium, Freddie Woodman, a free-transfer signing last summer, had only featured once, in the Carabao Cup in October.
An injury to Giorgi Mamardashvili in the second half against Everton, however, forced Woodman into Premier League action. He went on to play his part in Arne Slot’s side securing all three points, with Virgil van Dijk’s 100th-minute header ultimately proving decisive.
“It was a moment that I was waiting for and probably ready for as well,” Woodman told Liverpoolfc.com. “I’ve trained hard all season.
“I didn’t think it would come but it’s obviously amazing to do it in a Merseyside derby and then to win it like we did was unbelievable. It was a really nice moment for me and a nice moment for my family as well, so I’m pleased.”
Woodman arrived at Liverpool in the summer to strengthen the goalkeeping department after his contract with Preston North End expired.
He had spent three seasons at Deepdale following his move from Newcastle United, making 138 appearances in all competitions. Woodman is the son of former professional goalkeeper and manager of Bromley, Andy Woodman.
He began his career at Crystal Palace before joining Newcastle in 2013. During his time at St James’ Park, he went out on six loan spells with Hartlepool United, Crawley Town, Kilmarnock, Aberdeen, Swansea City and AFC Bournemouth.
He made nine senior appearances for Newcastle, including four in the Premier League. Woodman left Newcastle permanently for Preston in 2022 and was named the club’s Player of the Year in his debut season.
At international level, he represented England from youth level through to the U21s, winning the U17 European Championship in 2014 and the U20 World Cup in 2017, where he also claimed the Golden Glove award.
