Tottenham receive surprise boost after Juventus’ stance on 28-year-old Bournemouth star emerges

Tottenham have been keen on reinforcing their defensive unit.

Tottenham Hotspur’s primary focus is on staying in the Premier League. They have five games left to fight and win to clinch top-flight safety. However, the planning for the summer transfer has already begun.

Recent reports suggest Spurs have taken big strides towards landing Marcos Senesi on a free transfer from Bournemouth. Over the last couple of weeks, Tottenham have been in close contact with the central defender’s representatives regarding a summer move to White Hart Lane. The Argentina international strongly favours extending his stay within the highly competitive Premier League environment.

Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool are among the Premier League clubs interested in recruiting Marcos Senesi. The 28-year-old, who has interest from European outfits as well, is very much open to joining Tottenham, provided they are a Premier League club beyond this season. And now there has been further developments over Senesi’s future.

Juventus abandon Marcos Senesi’s pursuit

Tottenham are expected to face plenty of competition for Senesi. Juventus have also been interested in signing the defender on a potential free transfer from Bournemouth in the summer.

However, now according to a report from Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, Juventus ‘no longer’ consider Senesi at the top of their wishlist to partner Gleison Bremer. Head coach Luciano Spalletti does not view the Bournemouth star as an automatic starter in defence next season, with the Turin giants only considering him as an option in the wake of Lloyd Kelly’s exit.

Juventus want to add to their defensive ranks in the summer, someone who’d complement Bremer at the heart of their backline. Kelly has proven to be an underwhelming signing, and there are chances of him leaving the club, which’d leave the Serie A side without much depth at the back. Senesi’s name was initially explored, but Spalletti apparently does not feel the 28-year-old would enhance his team’s rearguard.

As per other reports, Juventus are formally turning their attention towards Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi after abandoning the pursuit of Senesi. Having established himself as one of the best centre-backs in Serie A in the last couple of years, Juve’s attraction towards Lucumi makes complete sense.

Juve cooling their interest in Senesi comes as a surprise boost for Tottenham. The Serie A side switching their focus to other targets may have made Tottenham’s pursuit of the Bournemouth star a tad easier. Still, the Lilywhites have to fend off interest from Premier League rivals to land the South American.

Most importantly, escaping the dreaded relegation zone remains absolutely mandatory if the Spurs are to have a realistic chance of landing Senesi.
