No surprise - Michael Owen shamefully tells Newcastle United star to join Liverpool

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon has been linked with Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Michael Owen believes Anthony Gordon would be a good fit for Liverpool this summer.

Transfer speculation has ramped up regarding the Newcastle United winger in recent weeks. The Gazette understands that Toon chiefs - keen to avoid a repeat of the Alexander Isak saga - could cash in should a potential suitor meet his asking price.

Gordon’s valuation is thought to be in the £80million mark - around double what Newcastle paid three years ago. While Liverpool - his boyhood club - have been touted as a possible destination, there is also reported Bayern Munich interest.

Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon

Eyebrows were raised when Eddie Howe left Gordon out of his squad for the 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth. The official line from the club was that the 25-year-old suffered a hip injury in training.

With Howe insisting he only wants committed players at Newcastle just 24 hours earlier, conspiracy theories were rampant. The Toon boss downplayed suggestions that Gordon's absence was anything other than injury-related at the full-time whistle.

“Today was an injury,” Howe told reporters. “He went for a scan on, again, I think it was Thursday morning, and it was clear he had an injury that would take him out of the game.

“I don't think it's a long-term injury. Whether he makes it next week, I don't know. We'll have to see how he goes this week in training.”

Michael Owen on Anthony Gordon

Unsurprisingly, former Newcastle striker Owen backed Gordon as a genuine option for Liverpool. He said: “That's more in keeping with what I think that Liverpool need - a wide player. They've got a big problem in that Salah is leaving. They're going to have to fill that gap.

“On the left-hand side, (Cody) Gakpo has been a very good player for a very long time but he's not had the best second, two-thirds of the season at all. He's opened the door to young Rio (Ngumoha). Whether he's ready to play more regularly is obviously a debate.

“But I would think that a right-sided attacker has got to be a priority to fill Salah’s shoes. That would be my idea of the first position that needs to be filled. I think he's a brilliant player, absolutely.

“Whether you could snare him away from Newcastle is obviously a different matter. But as an individual player, yeah, (I’m) a big fan. I think he should have a big role in the World Cup this year.”
