Former Liverpool star Fernando Torres has already taken his first steps into coaching and has been predicted to one day take over at Anfield. He has had a chance to learn under the best, too, having watched Jurgen Klopp at work towards the end of the German manager's Anfield tenure.

Torres, 42, retired from playing in 2019. He scored 81 times for Liverpool before leaving for Chelsea in a £50m deal in 2011 and also played in Spain, Italy and Japan, ending his career at Sagan Tosu.

He moved into coaching in 2021, working within the academy system at his former club Atletico Madrid. Since 2025, he has been in charge of Atleti's second-string Atletico Madrileno, who play in the third tier in Spain.

"Fernando Torres as Liverpool manager one day? Definitely. He's taken a different path to Cesc Fabregas, he has been patient and has preferred to start little by little with the youth team, gaining experience," former Spain international striker Fernando Llorente told Hajper.

Lllorente continued: "I think Fernando will become a great coach because he had an incredible career, knows a lot about football and has surely been preparing for the right moment to make the jump."

Torres' willingness to learn was evident in 2024 when he shadowed Klopp and assistant manager Pep Lijnders ahead of a Premier League game against Brighton. "I've had the opportunity to see how everything works from the inside, which is great," he told club media at the time.

"I'm a big fan of Jurgen and his staff and all around the AXA training facility, which is very different than when I was here, so obviously the club grows a lot, and I have the chance to see why. There are many reasons but it's amazing to be here and to be able to meet with Jurgen and Pep and all the staff to learn and try to understand the Liverpool way."

Armando de la Morena, who coached Torres when he was coming through the youth ranks at Atleti, similarly tipped the Spaniard for the top. "A coach like Fernando, knowing his career a bit, as a player and always with the respect that he has acted, has the conditions to be a great coach," he told Marca.

"I know it from the players too, who tell me wonders about him, how he transmits, how he gives them the concepts. So what I see in him is that if everything is going the right way, then we have a future coach for Spanish football and for Atletico and hopefully for the national team as well. Whatever he wants."

Now in his second season in charge of Atletico Madrileno, Torres has the team flying high as they eye up promotion to the Segunda Division. With five games of the season remaining they sit in third place and are on track for a spot in the play-offs if they can't make up the four-point gap to league leaders Eldense.
