Madrid clubs ready, waiting... Liverpool 'tempted' to sell £70m declining star

Liverpool could “cash in” on Alexis Mac Allister this summer after the challenges of the 2025-26 season.

Football Insider claims sources have told them that Liverpool are “tempted” by the idea of selling Mac Allister this summer transfer window.

Contract renewal talks with Liverpool have stalled, with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid reportedly ready and willing to take advantage of this impasse.

Liverpool decision-makers are alleged to consider Mac Allister as a “saleable asset”, with FI “*sources indicating that the Reds are likely to cash in on a few of their players in order to fund new additions.*”

Arne Slot confirmed this month that Liverpool will have to sell to buy this summer after their £420m summer spend last summer resulted in one of the worst recent seasons at Anfield.

He told the press: “We need to sell in order to buy new players. But we will lose Salah and Robertson on a free, that has happened already with Trent”.

“As you know, the club that we are we need to recoup our money and to spend again.”

How much could Liverpool get for Mac Allister and who should he be replaced with?

It’s been sad to see the decline of Mac Allister over the last 18 months or so.

His regression began in the final weeks of last season, when he struggled to match the tempo of play after Liverpool won the Premier League title.

Then, coming into the current season injured and missing out on a fair bit of pre-season really held him back. Slot’s team lacks fitness generally, with stats suggesting Liverpool have been outran all but once in the Premier League this season – a worrying indictment on his performance at Liverpool as a manager.

This stat is such a huge indictment of Slot’s setup.

Liverpool are going to have to sell this summer, and Mac Allister could fetch a tidy sum if he leaves. Transfermarkt reports he’s worth £70m (€80m) while Spanish outlet Defensa Central reports the same figure.

If the club does decide to part ways with Mac Allister, he must be replaced correctly.

Since Mac Allister’s regression began, Liverpool have been easier to bypass in midfield, slower in attacking transition and, just in general, lack any consistent tempo or rhythm in build-up play.

Whoever they replace Macca with needs to add these traits to Liverpool’s lineup.
