Leon Osman says it’s now ‘quite obvious’ what Everton must do after losing to Liverpool

Everton suffered a crushing late defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby at the weekend.

David Moyes’ side deserved at least a draw, and at some points in the game, it felt like they were going to win.

Moyes will have to quickly move on and get his players focused for the next game against West Ham United on Saturday.

Leon Osman has been reflecting on the derby, and he’s explained what Everton must do to develop as a team moving forward.

Leon Osman says Everton must be ‘ruthless’ in key moments to improve

Osman, speaking on Premier League Productions’ The Weekend Wrap, has explained that Moyes’ side must be more ‘ruthless’ in key moments if they’re to step up to the next level.

“I think it’s always at both ends of the game that the game is won and lost,” the former Toffees star noted.

“It’s quite obvious, I think you’ve got to be ruthless. I think look at the first half. Liverpool, 29 minutes, weren’t really in the game as an attacking team.

“One bit of good closing down, one Everton mistake, and Liverpool were completely ruthless in that moment. The same at the end.

“I think Everton getting into the penalty area on numerous occasions in good control of the ball at times and just didn’t show that same ruthlessness to make sure that the ball ended up in the back of the goal.

“And I think that’s the difference at the moment. Everton are having a really good season. There’s no doubt about it. But I think when you’re talking about the next step and improving the fine margins, I’m sure that’s where Everton will look to improve.”

Moyes will have to make some harsh decisions and upgrade on some of the current first-teamers who have performed well over the last 18 months.

Vitalii Mykolenko should be moved on in the summer, as he’s become one of the most error-prone players in the team.

Mykolenko gave the ball away 18 times in the Merseyside derby, so clearly the Toffees need a more polished left-back.

Even Beto, who has been in terrific form, is missing too many chances and isn’t quite good enough to be a starter.

A big summer window awaits the Merseysiders.
