Leon Osman shares what he found ‘disappointing’ about Everton vs Liverpool

Thousands of Everton fans were left disappointed after the Merseyside derby.

Even Jamie Carragher felt 1-1 would have been a fair result, so the late winner from Virgil van Dijk was particularly heartbreaking as much as it was surprising.

However, before that effort flew beyond Jordan Pickford, it was Everton’s inability to give Freddie Woodman a serious test in between the sticks that left Leon Osman particularly annoyed.

How many points are Everton taking from the final five? 💪

And how many points do you think Everton need to qualify for Europe? 🤔

Leon Osman says Everton went soft on Freddie Woodman

It looked as if Everton had a real opportunity to defeat Liverpool after Beto injured Giorgi Mamardashvili while sliding in to score the equaliser, as Arne Slot had to turn to the inexperienced Woodman.

However, despite the 29-year-old playing over 40 minutes of football on his Premier League debut, Everton hardly went near him.

Woodman only had to make one save, which Osman is furious about.

The man who made 433 appearances for Everton told the Outside the Box podcast: “I think the disappointing thing – second half wise – for us was the fact that, once the goalkeeper got injured, we didn’t really trouble him, Woodman.

“We had a couple of shots… that you’d probably expect the goalkeeper to save, but other than that.”

David Moyes would have been smelling blood as Liverpool lost Mamardashvili and conceded an equaliser at the same time, but it was almost as if Everton became complacent in that moment and felt the game was now going to be simple.

It was strange to see, as the 3-0 win over Chelsea before the Merseyside derby was an utterly ruthless performance, in which Everton took full advantage of a nervy team lacking confidence under Liam Rosenior.

The Toffees contrastingly took their foot off the gas against Liverpool when it ought to have been pedal to the metal, and hopefully, the players can learn from that gut-wrenching result.
