Opinion: John Stones to Everton may be off the cards after fresh news coming out of Finch Farm

John Stones has been heavily linked with a move to Everton.

David Moyes is reportedly keen on reuniting with John Stones, and the Manchester City defender is also believed to be open to a Merseyside return.

It has already been announced that Stones will definitely leave Man City at the end of the season, with his contract due to expire.

So, there will be a queue of clubs lining up to sign the 31-year-old on a free transfer; however, it now looks like the Toffees will be dropping out of the race.

Michael Keane’s new contract suggests John Stones to Everton is off

The breaking news coming out of Everton is that Michael Keane, who was due to leave this summer, has now signed a one-year contract.

Keane’s previous deal was running into its final few months, and it looked as though he would be departing the club after nine years.

However, Moyes has been impressed with the 33-year-old’s performances this season and has decided to reward him with a new deal.

Speaking to Everton’s website, the Scotsman said: “We’re pleased to have extended Michael’s long service at Everton.

“He is an experienced and respected member of the squad, who knows the standards we expect at the Club.

“Michael has been consistent all season and he’ll continue to be a valuable part of our squad going into next season.”

Following that news, it would be very surprising if Everton continue to pursue Stones, as the City defender appeared to be Keane’s potential replacement.

Surely now the Toffees will focus on recruiting a younger and longer-term option to partner with Jarrad Branthwaite moving forward.

That said, Chelsea’s highly-rated 19-year-old centre-back Josh Acheampong has been linked to the Hill Dickinson Stadium recently.
