While Liverpool's priority remains securing Champions League football next term, another significant issue is commanding the club's focus. Mohamed Salah sent shockwaves through Anfield and the broader football world when he declared his intention to depart the club this summer.

Qualifying for next season's European competition remains critical for Arne Slot and the Reds, with Saturday's fixture against Crystal Palace carrying considerable importance. Yet identifying who will step into Salah's considerable shoes is proving equally essential.

The Egyptian has netted 191 goals for the club since his 2017 arrival, guiding them to two Premier League titles, in 2020 and 2025, as well as the Champions League in 2019.

Today's Liverpool news features one potential target reportedly being considered to replace Salah. Meanwhile, Reds forward Hugo Ekitike has received a stark warning following his devastating injury blow.

Hugo Ekitike issued stark warning

The Reds forward has been told he will encounter some "dark" periods during his rehabilitation after rupturing his Achilles tendon. Nevertheless, former Premier League striker Clinton Morrison has suggested that the Frenchman could potentially return earlier than anticipated.

Ekitike went under the knife earlier this month, with approximately nine months typically needed to fully recover from such a serious injury.

Morrison exclusively told Freebets.com: "Just stay strong. Stay positive. Have good people around you. And in this day and age with all the medical technology available, it could be six or seven months.

"He's young - you heal quicker when you're young. But yeah, there'll be dark places. Watching the World Cup will hurt him. And when pre-season starts and all your teammates are in it and you're not - that's the hard one.

"But he's had a very good season overall, he's still young, he's a top player, and he will bounce back. The people at Liverpool, his family, his friends - they'll all get behind him. There is light at the end of the tunnel."

Ekitike has taken to social media following the serious injury and subsequent surgery, posting on Instagram: "It's hard, maybe even unfair. But I'm grateful this is happening to me here, among you. I'm not alone. Your strength and your love will be my driving force. See you again soon, Anfield."

Winger emerges as target

AC Milan forward Rafael Leao is reportedly catching the eye of Liverpool. The wideman is also believed to be on the radar of Manchester United, Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Leao has netted 10 goals in Serie A but has endured frustration as Milan appear destined to surrender the league title to city rivals Inter. The 26-year-old is also anticipated to feature prominently for Portugal at this summer's World Cup.

The Daily Mail reports Milan are willing to entertain offers as they seek to balance their finances. The club are understood to be seeking around £60million for the player, whose contract has two years remaining.

Last summer, Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web reported that Liverpool had made an enquiry regarding Leao. The winger has already signalled his approval to Arne Slot over a potential switch to England.

Speaking via Gazzetta dello Sport in 2023, he said: "I think every player wants to play in the Premier League because it's a very competitive league.

"It has engaging football, great teams and a worldwide audience. Serie A is currently very well positioned in the football world but I would definitely have to say the Premier League in the future."
