Paul Joyce confirms Liverpool are pondering summer move for 'one of the best right-backs in the world'

Liverpool are keeping tabs on the situation of Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries ahead of the summer transfer window, according to journalist Paul Joyce.

The Reds have had some big issues on the right of their defence this season after failing to properly replace Trent Alexander-Arnold.

And with question marks continuing to form over both Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong, Joyce says that Liverpool are pondering whether to trigger Dumfries‘ release clause.

With Arne Slot expected to stay, will Liverpool challenge for the Premier League next season?

Or will it be another difficult campaign? 😬

Liverpool weighing up whether to move for Dumfries

Liverpool were linked with Dumfries at the end of the January transfer window after seeing Bradley and Frimpong both sustain damaging injuries.

Having decided to pull away from a move, though, Joyce writes in The Times that the Reds continue to be ‘aware of the situation’ surrounding the Dutchman.

Available for a reported £21.7m via a release clause this summer, Liverpool are seemingly weighing up whether or not Dumfries is a viable option.

While confirming that the Reds considered a January move, Joyce claims that finalising Jeremy Jacquet’s arrival was ultimately viewed as a priority for Liverpool.

However, the inference is that they could return in the summer for a player who would add to the Reds’ already significant Dutch contingent.

Dumfries would arrive to put pressure on Bradley and Frimpong, with the latter having already claimed that his countryman is one of the best in the world in his position.

“I’m aware of the strong competition in the national team,” Frimpong said in February 2024. “I knew it would be difficult for me [to break into the national team], because Denzel Dumfries is one of the best right-backs in the world.”

Just over two years later, Frimpong and Dumfries could be set to do battle for club, as well as country.
