'What I heard': Fabrizio Romano confirms Rafael Leao news after claims Liverpool are plotting bargain swoop

Reported Liverpool target Rafael Leao could be available from AC Milan this summer, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

As they search for a new winger during the off-season, Thursday brought claims that the Reds are targeting Leao as a bargain addition.

With a potential fee of around £60m mooted by the Italian press, Romano has now confirmed that the 26-year-old is one to watch ahead of the summer window.

With Arne Slot expected to stay, will Liverpool challenge for the Premier League next season?

Or will it be another difficult campaign? 😬

Fabrizio Romano confirms Leao could leave AC Milan

As Liverpool assess possible options in forward areas, Leao would represent a ready-made, elite player who could step in immediately.

This could be especially attractive to a Liverpool team in transition, with the Portugal international offering an upgrade on Arne Slot’s current wide players.

Having been a star man across seven years at Milan, Leao has confirmed himself as one of Europe’s most consistent wingers, but according to Romano, a new chapter could await this summer.

“Rafa Leao, many questions on the AC Milan winger, because this could be one of the names of the summer transfer window,” the journalist told his YouTube channel on Friday.

“First, let me clarify one thing, it has not been an easy season for Leao, especially the second part of the season, but AC Milan are not actively looking to sell him. He is not a player who is completely out of the Milan project.

“But in case of a good proposal, for the player and for the club, there is a possibility of seeing Rafa Leao leaving AC Milan in the summer transfer window.”

Premier League clubs already calling for Leao

Romano went on to confirm that while Leao is not currently being actively targeted by either Barcelona or Bayern Munich, two, unnamed Premier League clubs have already called to get a read on the situation.

“There are many rumours coming from England about Premier League clubs,” he said.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

“I can tell you that some Premier League clubs have made calls to understand the situation, how much do AC Milan want, the salary situation.

“There’s been two Premier League clubs, from what I heard, calling to understand the situation. We are not talking about official proposals, official negotiations, but Premier League clubs have started making calls.”

Given their need for a new, effective wide player, it would not be a huge surprise if one of these clubs were to be Liverpool.

Richard Hughes has shown a willingness to delve into the Italian market during his two years at Liverpool so far, and if they are to do so again in 2026, Leao looks like he could be an option.
