Liverpool could potentially reignite their interest in Inter Milan wingback Denzel Dumfries, according to The Times reporter Paul Joyce.

The reliable journalist says the Reds will need to give “serious thought” to strengthening their options at right-back due to Conor Bradley’s poor injury record.

A move for Dumfries was considered during the January transfer window before the club devoted their efforts to signing Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes instead.

Even so, there is still an opportunity to revive their pursuit of Dumfries, with Joyce pointing to the release clause in the 30-year-old’s contract.

Liverpool can sign the player for just £22m

Dumfries will be available for a relatively affordable price during the summer transfer window.

The buyout fee in the Netherlands international’s contract currently stands at €25m (£22m), and the money saved from recruiting a cheaper fullback could then be put towards reinforcing other positions.

Dumfries is an imperfect solution for the right-back problem

The defender is already the wrong side of 30, and that counts against him, and so does his preference for playing in a back five.

Dumfries has thrived when playing as a wingback in his career, and the Reds would face the same issues they have had with Jeremie Frimpong.

The Dutchman has also had his injury problems this season. He spent over two months on the sidelines with an ankle injury and only returned to action in March.

Those misgivings may push sporting director Richard Hughes towards pursuing other targets this summer, if he plans to add more depth on the right-hand side of defence.
