How West Ham star Everton tried to sign in January has fared since

Had the winter transfer window panned out differently, Everton could have signed Callum Wilson.

It was The Athletic who said Everton wanted Wilson as West Ham spent roughly £50m to sign two new strikers in Taty Castellanos and Pablo Felipe from Lazio and Gil Vicente respectively.

However, Nuno Espirito Santo ultimately opted to keep the more experienced 34-year-old as backup in case his new recruits failed to shine.

As David Moyes now prepares to face Wilson at the London Stadium on Saturday, there are plenty of reasons for Everton to be wary.

Callum Wilson kickstarted West Ham turnaround and has a phenomenal record against Everton

Despite the arrivals of Castellanos and Felipe, it was the England international who scored a crucial goal against Tottenham back in January to seal a 2-1 win in the 93rd minute.

It ended a run of ten Premier League games without a win for West Ham, and set the Hammers on a streak of four wins and four draws in 11 Premier League outings since.

On a more personal level, Wilson – who Alan Shearer admires – could well be given a start by Nuno considering his remarkable record against Everton.

The former Bournemouth striker has netted eight goals in 11 games against the Toffees throughout his career, winning eight and drawing one of those fixtures.

It means Wilson is one for Moyes to keep an eye on this Saturday, and also shows exactly why the Glaswegian had a desire to sign him back in January.

Incidentally, the man born in Coventry sees his contract expire at the end of the season, so Everton will get another chance to sign him regardless of whether West Ham stay up or go down.

Wilson may seem too old for a lot of Everton fans to consider him a good signing, but with Moyes a fan of proven, experienced options, it would not surprise us one bit to see him end up at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
