Fabrizio Romano confirms Liverpool could sign 'one of the most underrated players in the world' this summer

Liverpool remain in the picture to sign Denzel Dumfries from Inter Milan this summer, says journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds are potentially on the lookout for a new right-back having seen Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong struggle this season.

After rumours emerged of a late Liverpool swoop in January, Dumfries came back onto the radar as a player to watch on Friday, and taking to his Italian language YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that the Dutchman could be one to watch.

With Arne Slot expected to stay, will Liverpool challenge for the Premier League next season?

Or will it be another difficult campaign? 😬

Liverpool remain a possible destination for Dumfries

As they looked to cope with injuries to Bradley and Frimpong, Liverpool briefly looked into signing Dumfries on loan in January.

According to Romano, Inter ‘immediately’ shut the door on that happening, but he says that interest has continued from Liverpool’s end, and with Dumfries’ release clause becoming active this summer, a move to Anfield could still transpire.

“Denzel Dumfries is a hot topic for the summer, an issue that we need to keep monitoring,” he said. “He has a release clause active in the summer, so that opens up the market potential. All the various opportunities are being explored for Dumfries. The release clause has a very limited timeframe.

“One team to keep an eye on Denzel Dumfries remains Liverpool. Liverpool already wanted him during the January transfer window. It wasn’t possible, partly because Dumfries was injured.”

“Inter wouldn’t have agreed to a loan deal in January, which was perhaps the only reason why Liverpool could even consider that kind of move, but Inter immediately said no.

“Let’s see whether this summer Liverpool go back in for Dumfries,” Romano added. “He’s certainly a player highly rated by the manager, Arne Slot. There’s a very good feeling there. But it remains to be seen whether Liverpool will choose Dumfries as their main priority target or not.”

Even if the Reds do ultimately decide on another target, it is heartening to hear that they are considering a new right-back at the very least.

You can only pick ONE player for Liverpool to sign this summer, who is it?

Who should Richard Hughes be targeting above all…

The position has become a real problem this season, and whether it is Dumfries or somebody else, Liverpool clearly need to sort it this summer.

Fans may wish to see a younger player arrive, but they should be mindful that Dumfries has been labelled as ‘the most underrated player in the world‘ by former Netherlands international Andy van der Meyde. He should not be written off.
