Liverpool players should be desperate to beat Palace after hearing Glasner's smug pre-match comments - opinion

Liverpool will be presented with another chance to end their dismal run against Crystal Palace at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Remarkably, the Reds have been beaten three times in all competitions by the Eagles in 2025/26, including a humiliating 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat in October.

Arne Slot’s team should need no extra motivation to finally get a win over what has become an unlikely nemesis, but after listening to Palace boss Oliver Glasner speak gloatingly about his trio of wins against them, Liverpool players should be fired up to end his smug superiority.

Glasner delights in Liverpool record

Glasner’s good record against Liverpool stretches back further than this season. The Austrian was also in charge as Palace beat the Reds 1-0 at Anfield during Jurgen Klopp’s final campaign.

It is clearly something he is proud of, and fairly so, but the extent to which he spoke about beating Liverpool during Friday’s pre-match press conference should add some fire into the bellies of Slot and his players.

“I think when you talk before a season and say: ‘OK, we win once against Liverpool’, you would say ‘yeah, it’s good’. And if you say we’d win twice against Liverpool, you would say, ‘well, it would be very good’. And you say we win three times against Liverpool, it’s amazing,” Glasner said.

“And now we have the opportunity to win four times against Liverpool in one season. I think that’s something unique.”

Clearly, the former Eintracht Frankfurt manager believes his team can beat the Reds again, and he later confirmed that they would be going to Anfield in search of a win.

“If we don’t go to Liverpool and have the ambition to win there, I would say, ‘hey, we could stay in London and enjoy the nice weather, having a coffee and maybe an after-work beer’, because it makes no sense going to Liverpool, spending two days there, and saying ‘if we lose, it’s fine’,” he said.

“If somebody asks you to do something you have never done in your life, then you have maybe a little bit of a concern and think, can I do it or not? You have doubts. But we have shown and proven that we can. This gives us confidence, but it’s also important for us that we stay humble, that we don’t take it for granted.

“I think we will get three or four chances against them, and if we take them, we have a chance to win. But we have to control their attack. I mentioned all these quality players. It’s not so easy, the pace, the individual quality, the style they are playing, the one-on-one players they have.”

With Arne Slot expected to stay, will Liverpool challenge for the Premier League next season?

Or will it be another difficult campaign? 😬

Liverpool have to put Palace back in their place

Liverpool’s current record against Palace is inexplicably bad. And while Glasner is clearly revelling in that, the Eagles are usually quick to poke fun at the Reds on social media after beating them as well.

Throw in the Marc Guehi debacle last summer, and the role Glasner played in that, and Liverpool fans really do need to see their team get the win on Saturday.

That won’t be easy, of course, and Palace are a very well-coached, difficult team to beat. But with the confidence of back-to-back Premier League wins behind them, Liverpool should be primed to start fast.

One player who they’ll definitely have to keep a close eye on is Ismaila Sarr. The Senegalese has scored an incredible seven goals in nine appearances against the Reds, bagging in each of the three matches this season, four in total.

As they face Glasner and Sarr once again, Liverpool have to restore some professional pride to themselves and the fans and take another big step towards Champions League qualification.
