What Everton said about Thierno Barry in January has aged like milk (opinion)

Time is running out for Thierno Barry to make a name for himself at Everton.

The 23-year-old made his 20th Premier League start of the season against West Ham in the absence of the concussed Beto, but failed to make much of an impact as the Toffees suffered a 2-1 defeat.

As Everton fans take aim at Thierno Barry and David Moyes undoubtedly loses a bit more faith in the Frenchman, a post uploaded onto X (previously known as Twitter) by the Toffees is now looking a tad embarrassing.

Boastful Everton made to look silly for Thierno Barry post

Back in January, Everton uploaded a tweet mocking a fan’s post from earlier in the season, in which the supporter asked: “Who scouted Thierno Barry?”

It read: “Who scouted Thierno Barry? The Toffees.” A smug emoji (😏) and a relieved emoji (😅) were also added, suggesting Everton believed the striker had finally come good.

Who scouted Thierno Barry?

The Toffees. 😏😅

The original post came after the Lyon-born striker went 14 Premier League games without a goal following his £27m move from Villarreal in July, leaving fans less than impressed.

Everton attempted to hit back at the doubters with that post in January, when Barry – who fans booed – embarked on a purple patch and scored four goals in five Premier League appearances.

It was almost as if the Toffees were trying to save face and say something along the lines of ‘look, we knew he would come good’ – but that confidence was short lived.

Since that post, Barry – who might perform better on the right – has only scored twice in 12 Premier League games, losing his spot to Beto along the way and causing a rift between himself and Everton fans following an altercation involving his friends inside the Emirates Stadium.

Can someone tell me why this wasn’t a penalty? 😤

With a distinct lack of effort on show from the Everton No.11 during games too, this £27m investment is starting to look like a significant waste of money, no matter how much the Toffees try to say otherwise by sarcastically mocking others on social media.
