How one Liverpool player etched his name into the Reds' history books vs Crystal Palace

Freddie Woodman was among the top performers when Liverpool secured a 3-1 win over Crystal Palace.

After coming off the bench last weekend against Everton, the former Preston North End man was given his first Premier League start under Arne Slot against the Eagles as Alisson Becker remains out.

Woodman had an amazing game against the Eagles, producing a total of five saves across the 90 minutes.

That is the joint-most of any Liverpool goalkeeper on their Premier League debut since records began.

Freddie Woodman matched Simon Mignolet record vs Crystal Palace

The only other player to achieve that feat was former Reds’ shot-stopper Simon Mignolet against Stoke City all the way back in August 2013.

As expected, the 29-year-old has now come in for high praise following the match.

Speaking to the BBC on Saturday afternoon, Andy Robertson called the Liverpool goalkeeper ‘outstanding’.

He said: “I thought he was outstanding. The lads and coaching staff had so much faith in him because we see him every day. I’m just gutted he didn’t get the clean sheet.”

Robertson also spoke about Crystal Palace scoring while Woodman was down injured in the second half.

The left-back added: “I don’t think he looks up. Woody went down, tried to get back up and went down again. Munoz is looking down, trying to concentrate on kicking the ball. My opinion is the ref should stop the game but goalkeepers are protected too much by the refs. Thankfully, we were the ones who scored the next and not them.”

Slot also reacted in his post-match interview, saying: “The number of times I’ve played against a team and then a player is on the floor and the referee blows the whistle.

“It happened against Man Utd when Mac Allister was on the floor, they played on and Macca needed five stitches afterwards. I don’t blame them, by the way, the referee should stop the game.”
