Former Premier League referee Peter Walton named Liverpool ‘demon' as toughest to officiate

Peter Walton, who refereed 169 Premier League matches, once named a former Liverpool player as the most difficult he had to officiate, describing him as a “demon” on the pitch.

Today, English football - with support from the PGMOL - is attempting to clamp down on dissent, lowering the threshold for yellow cards when players show clear disrespect towards officials. The intention is to give referees greater control, though it remains unclear how much impact the change has really had.

There are still plenty of strong personalities who regularly challenge decisions, with players like Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva often in the referee’s ear, questioning calls and making their frustrations known. Even so, Walton maintained that it was a now-retired Liverpool figure who stood out above the rest as his toughest opponent.

Walton, who refereed in the Premier League from 2003 to 2012, told Football FanCast in 2025 that the player he found most difficult to referee was former Liverpool forward Craig Bellamy, who gave him more issues than anyone else. He said:

"Craig Bellamy at Liverpool was always the guy. I will reiterate that Craig is a nice guy off the field but on the field he was a demon. He was such a hard guy to referee."

The 66-year-old also gave Chelsea legend John Terry an honourable mention. "John Terry was, again, a nice man, but he would always befriend you, and you had to question why he was befriending you," he began.

"Does he want me to feel comfortable with him or give him the benefit of the doubt? Some captains were quite good at their job. Terry led the Chelsea team very very well. He nurtured relationships with referees to give them that 1% difference."

It is little surprise Craig Bellamy was tough to referee on the pitch, given some of his actions off it during his time with Liverpool - most famously attacking teammate John Arne Riise with a golf club before a crucial Champions League clash against Barcelona.

Days later, however, both Riise and Bellamy scored at the Camp Nou to secure a memorable 2-1 away victory, with the incident seemingly having little impact on the team, as the latter swung an imaginary golf ball during a now-infamous celebration.

The infamous incident took place just days before a Champions League clash with Barcelona.

He also had well-documented clashes with managers, most notably Graeme Souness at Newcastle United, which led to a loan move to Celtic. Teammates often described him as a “fiery” presence in the dressing room, so it is hardly a surprise that referees like Mike Dean and Mark Clattenburg shared Walton’s view.

Nowadays, the 46-year-old is Wales' head coach - a position he has held since 2024. While the Red Dragons are yet to qualify for a major international tournament under his guidance, there are signs that England's neighbours are getting better.
