Alexander Isak talks about former Newcastle United player after ending 236-day Liverpool duck

Alexander Isak scored Liverpool’s opening goal in their 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Alexander Isak finally ended his eight-month wait without a Premier League goal for Liverpool at Anfield.

Despite Newcastle United’s woes, the Swede’s demise on Merseyside has been somewhat of a silver lining for supporters this season. Isak - previously adored at St James' Park - burned all of his bridges to push through a move to Liverpool last summer.

By refusing to train or play, the 26-year-old destroyed a three-year relationship with Newcastle fans. His exit - for a British record £125million - also had damaging effects on the Saudi-backed project.

Alexander Isak on Liverpool goal

Isak’s actions to force Newcastle’s hands meant he was not up to speed when arriving at Liverpool. Fitness niggles persisted in the early months of the campaign before the striker broke his leg in December.

Arne Slot has eased Isak back into the fold in recent weeks and he broke the deadlock against Crystal Palace yesterday - his first Premier League goal at Anfield since arriving. On the strike, he said post-match: “I felt like that shot was not going in so I kind of intercepted it and it became a good touch. Then I managed to put it into the back of the net.

“I’ve been battling getting back to full fitness and obviously scoring a goal is probably the best way to finding your form again. Obviously, I’m really happy.”

Alexander Isak hails Freddie Woodman

Isak also paid tribute to former Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman. Signed as third choice, injuries to Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili have given the 29-year-old a chance to shine.

Woodman stepped up, making several big saves - one of which sprang the counter-attack that led to Andy Robertson’s goal. On his teammate, Isak added: “I think he did absolutely brilliantly. It’s never easy to come in, especially in a position like him where you have to be ready but it’s not often you get the chance.

“It’s really big from him to be able to put on a performance like this. I think he deserved a clean sheet. But a really big performance from him.”
