Xabi Alonso has not held talks with Liverpool recently, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said that the last conversations that the Reds had with the Spaniard’s camp came before they appointed Arne Slot in the summer of 2024:

“I’m not aware of Xabi Alonso being already in talks with Liverpool. Liverpool have not approached Xabi Alonso so far. If they will do that in June or whenever, I will let you know. But at the moment, I’m not aware of Liverpool making any approaches for Xabi Alonso.”

“Last time they had conversations was before Arne Slot got appointed as new Liverpool coach a few years ago. But at that time, Xabi Alonso decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen and then prepare for his future move to Real Madrid. But that’s it. At the moment, nothing else to say about Xabi Alonso and Liverpool.”

Who is favourite to be manager of Liverpool next season?

Alonso remains odds-on to become the next head coach of the Merseyside club, although the lack of communication with the 44-year-old and his agent suggests no decision has been made on the manager’s position at the moment.

The bookies still have pretty short odds (2/1) on Slot being in charge for the first game of the 2026/27 campaign, too, so there is very little certainty about the whole situation.

Champions League qualification is now probable

One factor that could help Slot keep his job is the fact that a top 5 finish looks increasingly likely. The 3-1 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday evening means that the Reds need just 6 points to be mathematically certain of securing a Champions League spot for next season.

Liverpool’s board will, of course, take into account plenty of other elements before making a final decision on the manager’s future at Anfield.
