Manchester United's summer transfer budget could be all but confirmed this evening when the Reds take on Brentford at Old Trafford. A win for Michael Carrick's side will move them 11 points clear of sixth place Brighton with just 12 points remaining in the Premier League.
The result would set United up perfectly to seal their spot in next season's Champions League by beating Liverpool, completing the double over their rivals, while also harming Liverpool's bid for a top five finish in the process. It would be a superb end to a brilliant interim tenure for Carrick. The Reds looked miles away from a spot in next season's Champions League when the ex-midfielder took charge.
Now, United have the chance to finish the best of the rest in the chasing pack. Should the Reds qualify for the Champions League, Ineos will be under pressure to appoint Carrick as the permanent head coach next season.
Achieving what he has done with this group of players is impressive and while he has benefitted from a lack of distractions, his success cannot be undermined. Carrick insisted last week he was taking each day as it comes and he would not be drawn into discussions about his own future.
However, he did give an insight into what a Carrick-led summer transfer window could look like when quizzed about centre-backs. "I haven't got concerns," he explained. "I think we've got a mixed blend there of experience, of real quality and some young - I'd say more than talented really – two promising young players [Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven] that have already shown what they can do.
"I thought Ayden was fantastic last week in such a difficult game. I haven't got concerns. What the future looks like, I can't really get involved, because I'm not sure myself what that looks like."
Carrick is correct to praise both Heaven and Yoro. The duo are two brilliant examples of United looking towards the future, spending wisely and reaping the benefits early.
But tonight's clash with Brentford shows why United should be aware of opportunities to strengthen their defence. Harry Maguire is back after a two-match suspension and he has certainly been missed.

Against Leeds, the partnership of Yoro and Lisandro Martinez looked uneasy even before the latter was controversially sent off. Both men were then unavailable for the win at Chelsea with Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui performing superbly.
The issue for United is that, as things stand, Maguire is still the first choice centre-back. This is by no means a slight on the England international - he has been brilliant for Carrick.
He is not the future though. There is an argument to say United could start with Yoro and Heaven next season but as Carrick says, they are promising players. They have potential but are they ready to start together consistently with Champions League football added to the mix next season? It is difficult to say.
The experience that Carrick also praised has an asterisk next to it. If Matthijs de Ligt comes back the same player as he was before his injury, United will be delighted. Carrick knows as well as anyone that might not be the case.
Martinez has also suffered his fair share of injuries too and with his contract expiring in 2027, there are no guarantees he will be here beyond the end of next season. The same goes for Maguire. At his age, it is not certain United will want to extend his deal by a further 12 months come next year.
Heading into the future, United only have Yoro and Heaven as certainties to be in the squad at the start of 2027/28. Both Yoro and Heaven are on the right track but United's remaining centre-backs are short-term options. The fact Maguire remains a first choice when everyone is fit should be raising eyebrows.
He is a leader in the dressing room, someone who can be pivotal for Yoro and Heaven's development, but United need an extra addition if they want to be challenging where they feel they deserve to be. De Ligt could be the third for the future but he has a lot of work to do.
Even if he does prove it, a fourth centre-back who can 'plug and play' like Jason Wilcox said about Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, would not go amiss. United's depth needs to be addressed and that goes across the pitch.
