We started this weekends fixtures with a larger squad having Jamie Tregaskiss back from injury and Ruairi Murphy available. We kicked off with our 1st fixture against Everton. We put on a fantastic performance outclassing Everton in every area of the pitch. For a long period of the game it was 1-1 but we managed the game very well. We kept possession very well and remained patient sticking to our game plan which paid off with 2 goals in the last 4 minutes. Final score 3-1 to Cambridge City with goals from TJ Yates, Ruairi Murphy and Neil Hoey.
We then faced a strong Chelsea team. Again a fantastic performance, as with Everton we dominated the majority of the game and looked very comfortable in possession pining Chelsea back in their own half for most of the game.
In the 2nd half Chelsea had a spell towards the end of the game when they started to put us under pressure at the back, we dealt with this pressure well. When the game was looking like it was going to end with a 0-0 draw Chelsea managed to get a goal. The game ended 1-0 to Chelsea. A draw would have been a fair result at the very least for us. On the whole we were the better side and this was a hard defeat to take.
We then went into our final game of the day against AFAS. Expecting to put the disappointment of the Chelsea game behind us we ended up leaking 2 goals, the 1st from a penalty. The second half started very well for us with a fantastic corner taken by Jamie Tregaskiss finding the head of TJ Yates making it 2-1. The rest of the game was one way traffic with us hitting the post and crossbar of the AFAS goal. Unfortunately we were always chasing the game and not taking our chances meant the game finished 2-1.
We have many positives to take away from the weekend although our performances definitely deserved more than the 3 points we gained. It was very pleasing to see how well we played against Chelsea who we face in June in the FA Cup final. We know we are more than capable of competing with them and getting a result. We remain 3rd in the league with 6 points, AFAS sit 4th with 3 points , Everton remain 2nd with 9 points and Chelsea sit 1st with 18 points.
We now look forward to next month's fixtures on the 23rd May.
