Opinion: Everton have a chance to sign Eddie Howe favourite as Newcastle star expected to leave

Everton will need to significantly bolster their squad this summer.

European football is potentially on the horizon, but even without it, Everton need a much bigger squad to contend higher up in the Premier League next term.

The Toffees will have to be shrewd in their business, allowing bigger funds to be spent on priority areas of the pitch.

David Moyes and his recruitment chiefs should be looking at the free agent market to strengthen the lesser-priority positions.

With that said, they have the chance to sign a highly-experienced Newcastle United player on a free transfer.

Everton should consider signing Fabian Schar on a free transfer

According to The Athletic’s journalist Chris Waugh, Fabian Schar is expected to leave Newcastle at the end of the season.

Schar is out of contract in June, and the Magpies are willing to let him depart on a free transfer, as they look to bring in a younger centre-back.

Everton should seriously consider landing the 34-year-old’s signature on a free, as the Toffees would then have two very capable back-ups at centre-back.

Michael Keane and Schar would be behind Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski in the pecking order, making it a very strong quarter for Moyes to choose from.

The benefit of signing the 86-cap Switzerland international would be his European experience, as he has played 22 times in the Champions League and 15 in the Europa League.

Admittedly, Everton would have an ageing backline, but they can’t expect to adequately address every area of the squad in one window.

For now, it’d be a smart recruit, as it’d facilitate the Toffees to spend big money on a centre-forward and two full-backs, which is an absolute must.

Eddie Howe has previously labelled Schar the ‘ultimate professional’, so he’d be a great character to have around Finch Farm.

“He’s been the ultimate professional off the pitch as well. He’s been a big part of the leadership within the team as well.

“I think he’s a role model for the younger players to look at in terms of how to conduct yourself, so I’m delighted for him.”
