Everton could now make a swoop to bring in Nathan Ake from Manchester City.
The Toffees are on the hunt for European qualification and will be eager to add to their squad to continue the improvement under David Moyes.
There have already been various transfer targets linked with a move to Hill Dickinson Stadium, and defensive options may prove a priority.
Jarrad Branthwaite has struggled with injury problems, so bringing in cover for the Englishman would be a wise move on Merseyside.

That could afford Everton a perfect chance to sign Ake after being linked to him previously in recent months and years.
