Coventry City and Frank Lampard are going to need numerous signings to bridge the gap from the Championship to the Premier League, which perhaps explains the link to Juventus forward Lois Openda.
It's certainly an ambitious move, with Openda linked to Coventry City in recent days after a disappointing campaign for the Belgian in Turin. The striker has notched just two goals in his 34 appearances this season, but Juventus are obligated to sign him permanently for €40 million (£37.5 million) this summer.
Prior to that, the centre-forward scored 99 goals and bagged 43 assists in 223 appearances for RB Leipzig, Vitesse Arnhem, and RC Lens. He's a player with bags of pace and has been clinical prior to moving to Italian football.
The 26-year-old will potentially be eyeing a fresh start and Coventry could private that, adding to the likes of Haji Wright, Ellis Simms, and Brandon Thomas-Asante in terms of the strikers at Lampard's disposal.
Coventry City verdict issued on Lois Openda transfer links
Lois Openda, Juventus
FLW asked our Coventry fan pundit Chris for his thoughts on the forward after struggling on loan at Juventus by scoring just twice all season, having previously ripped it up with both Lens and Leipzig.
We asked if he is worth the risk, or if this is another big-name signing for Doug King to avoid this summer? He said: "This is a really interesting one and I really hope there's some weight behind this rumour because it would be a fantastic signing.
"Openda made a big-money move to Leipzig and he cost something like £40 million. He was fantastic for Leipzig. He was fantastic for Vitesse and Lens before then as well.
Is Lois Openda someone you would like to see join Coventry? What sort of striker do you want this summer? Comment below!
"He's really struggled since moving to Juventus on loan, but that might just be a Juventus thing and a Serie A thing. It's not exactly known for being an attacking league and a league full of flair — not anymore.
"It was 30-odd years ago. But, to me, it's a fairly boring league with fairly boring teams and boring tactics. It's very defensive. I don't think it's a league which suits Openda. He is very fast.
"I don't think Juventus setup for that kind of play, so it was an interesting signing in the first place. I think he's the kind of player who could thrive in the Premier League.
"Whether he does that for us or not, I don't know. His wages are going to be a big thing. I don't know if he's a top earner at Juventus, but either way, given their mid-to-top earners over there are on decent money — £100k or whatever, wages could be a stumbling block."
Haji Wright may have to leave for Coventry City to bring in Lois Openda
Frank Lampard, Haji Wright, Coventry City
With Frank Lampard only operating with one striker in his Coventry system, it will naturally beg the question as to where Openda would fit in at the CBS Arena - especially given the presence of Haji Wright.
The USA international has hit double figures in all three of his seasons at the Sky Blues, finding the back of the net 17 times in their Championship-winning campaign, but if Openda were to arrive, then it would surely bring his stance into question.
And FLW fan pundit Chris would back the club to cash in on Wright this summer if it meant facilitating the arrival of the expensive belgian.
On how big of a coup this could be for Coventry, Chris added: "I think, more than anything, bigger teams going in for him could be a stumbling block. Openda, even just on loan would possibly be the most impressive signing we've ever made in club history.
"He's a huge name, a huge talent, and is worth a huge amount of money. Does he want to come in and be part of what is probably going to be a relegation battle, let's be honest? Let's be realistic? I don't know.
"Maybe he will just be champing at the bit to get any good play time and to advertise himself to other clubs. Helping to keep a club like Coventry up by scoring the goals that keep us up would be a hell of an advertisement for himself.
"So, I hope that happens. Obviously a fantastic player. You'd say probably too good for us. I would absolutely love to see the back of Haji Wright and replace him with Openda."
