Arsenal 'firm up interest' in Newcastle United star amid 'positive talks' claim

The latest transfer talk from Newcastle United as Premier League leaders Arsenal show interest in a Magpies star.

Premier League title contenders Arsenal have reportedly stepped up their interest in Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies star has been the subject of ongoing speculation in recent weeks as he focuses on his return from a thigh injury he picked up in a home defeat against Bournemouth that means he is facing a battle to feature against this season.

Speaking last month, United manager Eddie Howe said of the injury: “Tino went for a scan initially. We don’t think it’s a bad injury, but we’ll wait and see whether he plays again this season. He’s due to have another scan at the weekend to determine the full extent of his time out.

“Tino’s had a frustrating season. He had such an outstanding season last year, he was fit and available and really contributed to what we delivered. This year’s been different, that’s just the life of a footballer I’m afraid. He’s never been able to get that run of games to really find his best form, but he’s an outstanding player and we just hope he has a better run around the corner.”

‘Open to a move’

The injury has placed jeopardy on Livramento’s chances of securing a spot in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup finals in North America - but it seems likely the former Chelsea academy star’s summer could be dominated by talk of a potential move away from Newcastle after a number of clubs were linked with a move for his services. Manchester City have been routinely suggested as possible suitors for the Magpies star - but a more recent report has now stated Arsenal have stepped up their interest as they look for a replacement for Ben White.

Football Transfers have reported the current Premier League leaders have ‘firmed up their interest’ in Livramento after holding positive discussions and the full-back is said to be open to a move to the Emirates Stadium. However, Newcastle are described as ‘reluctant’ to authorise a sale of the former Southampton man despite being ‘resigned to potentially losing two or three significant players this summer’.

‘Outside noise’

Magpies boss Howe has already opened up on speculation linking several of his key players with moves away from St James Park this summer, stating such talk was ‘not helpful’.

He said: "I think your best players will be the ones who are linked with high profile moves. It is certainly not helpful to us, it is not something we encourage or we want. We want players who are 100% focused, with no outside noise. Outside noise can affect players in different ways.

“Those players that you mentioned are all super professional, they are great players in their own way, in their own right. We need them to make the difference on the pitch and I would say the same to all the players. It is reputations and how people assess you is one thing but what you deliver on the pitch is another. We need our best players playing at their best level and that is what we need from all players stepping on to the pitch."
