Arsenal qualify for Champions League final as Gunners down Atletico Madrid

Bukayo Saka fired Arsenal to Budapest as they battled past Atletico Madrid to reach their first Champions League final since 2006. The Gunners will now collide with Bayern Munich or PSG on May 30 for a shot at European supremacy.

Stand-in captain Saka was on hand to force Mikel Arteta's Double-chasers ahead on 44 minutes after Jan Oblak kept out Leandro Trossard's strike.

Grit and resolute defending eventually got the Premier League leaders over the line as they recorded their 30th clean sheet of the season across all competitions - with Arsenal also ensuring they have gone the entirety of the knockout phase without conceding at home.

The Gunners arrived at the Emirates Stadium pre-match greeted by a vociferous home support, favourites to get the job done after last week's 1-1 draw in the Spanish capital.

And certainly, like last week, it was Arteta's men who dominated the opening half. However, they had little to show for it until Trossard cut inside on his right foot and struck goalwards, veteran stopper Oblak parried, and Saka pounced to turn home from close range.

Last week, Diego Simeone's men responded and turned the screw in the second period, and while they attempted to throw caution to the wind again here - with the Argentine throwing on forwards and making his five substitutions in pretty quick succession midway through the half - Arsenal showed a streetwise edge to largely nullify the away threat.

Indeed, it was actually the Gunners who came closest to the second, a fine cross from substitute Piero Hincapie finding Viktor Gyokeres, who fired over from 18 yards, on a night where he produced perhaps his best display in an Arsenal shirt.
