Wednesday’s briefing: Arsenal await opponents for Champions League final

Arsenal are into their first Champions League final in two decades after Bukayo Saka’s strike earned them a 1-0 semi-final second leg win over Atletico Madrid.

A 71-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after abuse allegedly directed at Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo during Monday night’s 3-3 draw at Everton.

And attention is already turning to Wednesday night, with big games in the Women’s Super League and the Champions League.

Arsenal have the opportunity to complete the greatest season in their 140-year history after seeing off Atletico to secure their place in Budapest on May 30.

Twenty-four hours after Manchester City’s draw at Everton put them back in control of the Premier League title race, Arsenal moved a step closer to what would be their first European title with a win that sets up a final against either Bayern Munich or Paris St Germain.

Saka was just four years old when an Arsenal side boasting the likes of Thierry Henry, Robert Pires and Sol Campbell were beaten by Barcelona in Paris in 2006, but he was the man to poke home after Leandro Trossard’s shot was parried by Jan Oblak.

Mikel Arteta savoured the moment but is now keen for Arsenal to quickly reset so that they can travel to Hungary as Premier League champions. If they can win their final three games against West Ham, Burnley and Crystal Palace, they will do just that.

“It’s great. Everybody can feel a shift in energy, in belief, in everything,” Arteta said. “Let’s use it in the right way and understand that the margins and the difficulty of what we are trying to achieve are huge, but that we have the ability and the conviction to do it.”

A 71-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of directing racist abuse towards Semenyo during Monday’s draw between Everton and Manchester City.

Merseyside Police said a man from Nottinghamshire was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after supporters and stewards reported that racist abuse was shouted by a fan. The man has since been bailed with conditions that prevent him from attending matches.

A police statement said: “An investigation into the incident during the match remains ongoing and we continue to work closely with Everton Football Club.”

Everton said: “Racism and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable. They have no place in our stadia, our sport or in society, and behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated.

“A swift response from fellow supporters, stewards and Merseyside Police led to the individual being identified and appropriate action taken.”

City condemned the incident while also saying defender Marc Guehi had been subjected to racist abuse on social media following the match.

Arsenal quickly refocus on WSL challenge

The Premier League is not the only title race between Manchester City and Arsenal, with the two clubs also doing battle at the top of the Women’s Super League, where the advantage is with City after their nervy win over Liverpool at the weekend.

Arsenal must win their three games in hand to take it to the final day, but boss Renee Slegers believes her side are ready to do just that despite the disappointment of their Women’s Champions League exit at the hands of Lyon.

“You could see straight away they were humble in defeat,” said Slegers, who gave her squad a day off.

“So far it says something about the growth of the team that the way we respond to setbacks and put things in perspective is we come together, we take ownership and we move on.”

England forward Beth Mead will be back at Slegers’ disposal, but the trip to Brighton comes too soon for Australian defender Steph Catley.

Paris St Germain and Bayern Munich served up a Champions League all-time classic last week as PSG edged their semi-final first leg 5-4 in the French capital.

Anyone fearing the two sides might shut up shop for Wednesday’s second leg will have been delighted to hear Vincent Kompany’s comments on the eve of the contest.

“If I said that I absolutely want to do something completely different, that wouldn’t be a good answer,” Kompany said.

“It’s about offering small details as solutions. The guys need to be encouraged in what they’ve done well all season.”

Luis Enrique has likewise ruled out PSG looking to protect their lead from the first leg.

“I can’t say it’s going to be different from what we saw in the first match,” he said. “I think neither team accepts that the other team is better. It means this match could be better again.”

What’s on today?

That Champions League meeting between Bayern and PSG in Munich will have fans of attacking football salivating as Arsenal wait to learn their final opponents.

Arsenal’s critical WSL match at Brighton kicks off at 7.45pm.
