Report: Arsenal now preparing opening offer for "one of the most talented CBs in Europe"

Arsenal are now readying an opening bid for PSV Eindhoven centre-back Yarek Gasiorowski, with the Dutch side willing to sanction a transfer for around €40m (£35m).

The Gunners want to strengthen their defence this summer, but they did a stellar job keeping Atletico Madrid at bay in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final on Tuesday night, booking their place in the final with a narrow 1-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta had his preferred centre-back partnership of Gabriel and William Saliba available, and the duo recorded 19 defensive actions between them, with Bukayo Saka scoring the all-important winning goal on the brink of half-time.

Legendary manager Arsene Wenger lauded Arteta's backline after the game, saying: "We said before the game that to go to the final, they needed to be strong defensively and they didn't concede a goal tonight. They played a team who for 45 minutes absolutely needed to score a goal and they didn't give them a chance.

"I believe it shows how strong Arsenal are defensively and how disciplined they are, as well as the limitations of Atletico, who were not good enough in the final third.

However, making further additions at centre-back is on the agenda this summer, according to a report from Sports Boom, which states Arsenal are preparing a €25m (£22m) opening bid for PSV star Gasiorowski.

It is unclear whether that would be enough to get a deal over the line though, with the Eredivisie side looking to hold out for €40m (£35m), given the centre-back's importance.

The Gunners are said to want to bring in a new long-term partner for Gabriel in case Saliba departs, but there may be competition for the 21-year-old's signature from the likes of Brentford, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Statistically, Arsenal have the best defence in the Premier League this season, having conceded just 26 goals, which is the fewest of any side, but scout Jacek Kulig has suggested the PSV defender is one of the most talented defenders on the continent.

The Spaniard has been an important player for PSV this season, picking up three goals and two assists in 26 Eredivisie outings, and an average of 8.5 defensive contributions per 90 is the second-highest in the squad.

As such, Gasiorowski could be ready to take the next step by making a move to the Premier League, but centre-back is not the only area of defence in which Arsenal are keen to strengthen.
