Atletico Madrid have set an asking price of £130m for Arsenal transfer target Julian Alvarez, according to reports.

Sky Sports claim that Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta is very keen on recruiting the Argentinian international for a second time.

The Italian masterminded Alvarez’s £82m move to Atletico Madrid when he was in charge of transfers at the Spanish club in 2024.

However, it looks like the forward won’t be sold for a reasonable fee even if he does ask to leave the Metropolitano.

Alvarez would cost a British transfer record fee

The highest fee that a British club has ever paid for a player is £125m. That is the amount that Liverpool paid Newcastle for Alexander Isak last summer.

Spending such huge sums comes with significant risk, and Arsenal will have to weigh up whether such an outlay is truly worthwhile.

With Viktor Gyokeres finally starting to look like an elite number nine, some fans would question the logic of shelling out on Alvarez when other positions -such as the left wing – are in more urgent need of strengthening.

Arsenal would face stiff competition for the striker

Sky Sports have confirmed that Barcelona are interested in Alvarez, but crucially, they also name the Gunners’ Champions League final opppnents, Paris Saint-Germain, as another potential suitor.

There are doubts about Barca’s ability to match Atletico’s valuation due to limited funds, but that won’t be the case for PSG, whose wealth in the world of football is pretty much unparalleled.

It should also be pointed out that Mikel Arteta’s side will need to offload a fair number of players first before they can proceed with an offer for Alvarez, as they need to comply with the Premier League’s squad cost ratio rules.
