Newcastle United are interested in the transfer of Luis Suárez from Sporting CP
Newcastle United are watching another Sporting striker closely after seeing Viktor Gyökeres become a success following his move to Arsenal.
And this time the player attracting attention is Luis Suárez, who has quietly put together one of the most productive seasons in Europe. And yes, his name is the same as the former Liverpool striker’s.
He is also not Uruguayan – he is Colombian. And he has scored 35 goals in 50 official matches for Sporting this season.
He has also added several assists and become the clear attacking reference for manager Rui Borges’ side after arriving from Almería last summer, as Viktor Gyökeres’ replacement.
Before moving to Portugal, Suárez had already shown his goalscoring ability in Spain by finishing as the second division top scorer during the 2024-25 season. That form has now pushed him firmly onto Premier League radar.
Attracting attention again
Earlier this year, we covered claims from Portugal mentioning Newcastle United and Liverpool as interested parties. The dust settled a bit while Sporting advanced through the Champions League knock-outs and chased Porto in the league.
Now both their runs have come to an end, so speculation is starting to grow again.
And according to Record, Newcastle have been making enquiries about the 28-year-old striker and have accumulated scouting reports during the season, especially after his performances in the Champions League.
The Portuguese newspaper explains there is still no formal proposal on the table. Sporting also remain relaxed about the growing interest because of the player’s €80m (£69m) release clause, a figure the Lisbon side reportedly have no intention of lowering.
Newcastle United keeping close watch
Luis Suárez has reportedly become a regular topic inside Newcastle’s scouting department in recent months. The Magpies are looking at attacking reinforcements and see similarities between the Colombian’s rise and the path previously taken by Gyökeres at Sporting.
However, Record note Newcastle’s sporting situation could become a factor in any eventual negotiations. Eddie Howe’s side are currently sitting around mid-table and may miss out on European football next season.
That matters to Suárez. The striker reportedly wants to continue fighting for trophies and playing European football after finally returning to Europe’s biggest stage this season.
For now, his focus remains on Sporting’s final matches of the campaign and the upcoming World Cup with Colombia, where he could face Portugal during the group stage.
Sporting confident over situation
Despite the transfer noise, the report says Luis Suárez is happy in Lisbon and currently wants to stay at Sporting.
The forward has reportedly settled extremely well in Portugal and feels trusted by the club’s hierarchy, coaching staff and supporters.
Record add that stability has been especially important during a difficult personal period involving an ongoing legal dispute connected to his children from a previous marriage.
That leaves Sporting in a strong position ahead of the summer window.
The Portuguese club have a striker scoring at elite levels, a player who is not pushing to leave, and an €80m (£69m) clause protecting them from low offers.
Still, Newcastle’s growing interest suggests Premier League clubs increasingly believe Suárez could follow Gyökeres’ path and become Sporting’s next major export.
