Taylor Jenkins sets record straight on ‘great relationship’ with Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Milwaukee Bucks have officially hired Taylor Jenkins as the franchise’s next head coach following the decision to mutually part ways with Doc Rivers. And one of the biggest questions now at hand is what does the future hold for Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and could Taylor Jenkins’ hire be a move to appease him?

While there was some speculation as to whether or not Giannis Antetokounmpo was involved in the Bucks’ coaching search, now that the search is over, Taylor Jenkins re-affirmed that his current relationship with the franchise star is strong.

“Giannis and I have a great relationship, great communication so far, he’s been so welcoming to me,” Jenkins said. “A lot of our communication has just been about re-establishing that relationship. Obviously I was in Milwaukee for only a year, so now it’s kind of building on that respect that we had for each other for the last seven years, and kind of just talking about this opportunity to come back to Milwaukee.”

Jenkins was an assistant coach with the Bucks during the 2018-19 season, right before he was eventually hired as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies. Prior to that, Jenkins had spent time as an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks. It’s significant in that Jenkins is already familiar with Antetokounmpo.

This offseason promises to be an interesting one for the Bucks as rumors continue to swirl regarding Antetokounmpo’s potential exit.

Antetokounmpo was limited to only 36 games this season due to injury. He averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists with splits of 62.4 percent shooting from the field, 33.3 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 65 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
