The San Antonio Spurs head to Minneapolis tonight with their second round series against the Minnesota Timberwolves tied 1-1. After dropping Game 1 by a final score of 104-102, the Spurs answered emphatically in Game 2 with a 133-95 blowout win to wrest momentum back in their favor.

Game 2 was about as dominant as San Antonio could have hoped (see the Final Grades). The Spurs built separation in the second quarter, took a 24-point lead into halftime and never let Minnesota back into the game. Victor Wembanyama finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds, Stephon Castle added 21 points, and San Antonio’s defense held the Timberwolves under 40% shooting.

San Antonio Spurs Injury Update

The Spurs have a clean injury report entering Game 3. That is important because San Antonio’s depth has mattered in this matchup. Carter Bryant returned after missing Game 1 and his return made a noticeable difference in the rotation. Specifically, Bryant’s strength was helpful against Julius Randle and Minnesota’s other physical players.

Minnesota Timberwolves Injury Update

The biggest question again is Anthony Edwards. He remains listed as questionable with his left knee injury. Ayo Dosunmu is also questionable. Edwards has combined for only 30 points through the first two games while still working his way back from the bruised and hyperextended knee, so his effectiveness remains one of the central variables in this series.

Dosunmu returned to the rotation after missing a pair of playoff games. He didn’t look healthy in Game 2 and eventually exited with what the Timberwolves are claiming is a different injury.

San Antonio Spurs Starting Lineup

Expect the Spurs to stick with their usual opening group: De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, Julian Champagnie and Victor Wembanyama. There is no reason to make a change after a 38-point win.

Castle will again be one of the keys. He was excellent in Game 2 and his ability to pressure the rim while also defending Minnesota’s perimeter playmakers gives San Antonio a lot of flexibility.

Betting Guide: Spurs vs. Timberwolves

San Antonio is favored by 4.5 points and the over/under is 216.5 points. The smart money is on the under. Even though San Antonio’s offense exploded in Game 2, offense will likely be harder to come by on the road.
