League executives believe that Giannis Antetokounmpo would prefer an Eastern Conference contender, instead of landing in the West, should he and the Bucks split.
Should Giannis Antetokounmpo part ways with the Milwaukee Bucks, it is widely believed that the Greek superstar will prefer staying in the Eastern Conference to join a title-contending team.
Sam Amick of The Athletic relayed the latest around Antetokounmpo, noting that landing in the West isn't perceived to be ideal for the two-time MVP.
"Yet there is significant skepticism among rival executives that Giannis Antetokounmpo would welcome this option, as he is believed to be interested in joining a true title-contender. The Trail Blazers, even with him, would likely struggle to reach that tier. As these playoffs have shown so far, joining a top-tier team in the East would be the wiser way to reach that goal," Amick wrote.
"That sentiment comes up frequently in leaguewide discussions about what Antetokounmpo might want, as it’s widely believed he’d prefer to play for an Eastern Conference team."
Giannis and the Bucks have a major offseason ahead regarding their future, following a tough 2025-26 season filled with injuries, frustration, and failure to reach the NBA Playoffs for the first time since 2016.
At the end of the regular season, both sides made headlines for their conflicting viewpoint about the superstar big man's health and playing capability.
As it is, the Miami Heat stands as the most prominent suitor of Antetokounmpo in the East.
The likes of the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Portland Trail Blazers and the Los Angeles Lakers were previously rumored as key teams monitoring the Giannis trade front from the Western Conference.
